My Fall Fashion Wish List and a Guest Blog Post

Fall Fashion Wish List

Hello and Happy October! I know we are well into fall now but I thought I would drop in and post about some of the items I’ve had on my fashion wish list for this season. I’ve been wanting to pick up some good basics and I think these pieces could mix and match really well with other items I already have. What about your wish lists? What things have you all had your eye on for fall? Fashion is so fun this time of year with all of the rich colors and textures, I’d love to hear what you all have on your fashion radar screens.

My Fall Wish List

Fisherman’s Sweater – I’m in need of a few new sweaters this year (after the winter we had last year I’m stocking up…) and I’ve been thinking about adding a fisherman’s sweater to my closet. I love the texture that a sweater like this offers and I think you can style it in a variety of ways depending on the look you’re going for. I’ve got my eye on one like this from LL Bean’s Signature Collection.

Flannel Shirt – No, I’m not going for the lumberjack look. ūüėČ But lately I’ve been thinking that a flannel shirt would be great to have. Again, maybe it’s the crazy cold winter we had last year that’s influencing my fashion choices this fall, but I think I could get a lot of use out of a flannel button-down. I’m always cold and it seems like such a soft and cozy piece to have in my wardrobe rotation. It looks like Target has a few cute options right now.

Black Coated Denim РI wear jeans all the time and I think having a pair like these could be fun to up the interest factor in an outfit. I love the shine and the way the coating almost makes them look a little like leather.  I could see wearing them mostly at night, like if I was meeting friends out for dinner or drinks. Old Navy has these available right now for a great price.

Ankle Boots – I’m in desperate need of a new pair of ankle boots and I think a pair in a taupe-y sort of suede could be a great neutral that would go with a lot. I’ve had my eye on this pair from Lands’ End.

So that’s it, my fall fashion wish list. Pretty simple, but items I think I could get tons of use out of. What about everyone else? What have you all had your eye on this fall?

I’m Guest Blogging!

Aside from fall fashion, I’m also guest posting today on the healthy living blog, BalancingB, for Brynn who just had her first baby a couple of weeks ago. Brynn is a certified health coach and covers all things healthy lifestyle with fantastic tips and inspiration for living a balanced and healthy life.¬† I’m talking about the jogger pant trend that’s been so popular recently and how I’m wearing it so be sure to go over and check out the post as well as the rest of this great blog.

Happy Fall, Everyone!

Summer Favorites…

How can it be Labor Day already? This summer went by much too quickly. Anyway, to mark the end of the season I thought I would post about a few things I was loving this summer in fashion, beauty, food and tunes. Enjoy!

IN FASHION…I’m a stylist for Stella & Dot so I’m always picking up new things from each season to show at trunk shows and to use myself so I can speak to the quality, styling options, etc. and I have to say that this has been one of my most-used items Stella & Dot items to date. This particular bag debuted last summer but I didn’t pick it up until this past spring and I’m really glad I finally got it. I’m a sucker for navy and white in the summer so this bag went with so many of my outfits and looked equally great dressed up or down depending on where I was headed. In terms of functionality, the bag is quite roomy with several interior pockets and a water bottle holder (I actually put my sunglasses in there) to keep things organized and it was great for tossing in all sorts of items for myself, my kids, and even my husband.

IN FASHION…this Breton-style shirt. I’ve always loved a classic shirt like this and have needed a replacement for my wardrobe because I got rid of an old one I had a few months ago. So when I saw this version on sale in the Boden catalog earlier this summer I quickly made an order. The material is a lighter-weight cotton РI almost wish it was a tad heavier Рbut for summer weather in Michigan it has been perfect. It’s a great staple piece to have because it just adds interest to any outfit. Wear it classic like Kate Middleton does or use it to create an outfit with a lot of interest by mixing patterns Рpair it with a fun floral scarf or top it with a button-down polka dot shirt with just the neckline and bottom of the sleeves peeking out. There are tons of ideas out there on how to style it that work well for summer and it will be a great piece to have for fall as well.

IN BEAUTY…this matte lip balm from Revlon. I’ve often thought it would be fun to have some sort of orange-y lip product in my makeup bag for use on occasion to achieve a look sort of like¬†these from J. Crew. So earlier this summer when I was watching a YouTube video from Miss Glamorazzi and she mentioned this lip balm from Revlon in a great orange/tangerine color I figured, why not pick one up. After an exhaustive search of the Internet to check more reviews (I found a really helpful one by Miss Budget Beauty) I finally settled on the same color, Audacious, that I saw on YouTube. So I loaded my little ones into the car one afternoon and ran out to pick up a tube. Once home, I ran straight to the bathroom, tried it on, and…voila! The wild tangerine look I was going for! The balm goes on super bright so I usually blot a couple of times to tone it down but I love how it goes absolutely amazing with sunkissed skin and adds that perfect little pop of color to an overall look. I think it will transition well to fall with certain outfits as well. (The color here isn’t showing up as bright as it does in person but I think you can get the gist.)

IN FOOD…my daily dose of ice cream. Okay, ice cream is a given in the summertime, right? I became a little addicted this summer though and it spread to my four-year-old as well. It’s to the point where he will absolutely not start his bedtime routine without first having had his own little dish. In in his words, “I want big lumps, Mom. Big lumps.” (Apparently “lumps” = scoops in kid-speak…) So, yeah, we’ve had a lot of ice cream this summer. My favorite summer ice cream was probably from Kilwin’s in Petoskey while on vacation. Yum.

Vanilla ice cream and lemon sorbet from Kilwin's of Petoskey

IN TUNESthe song “Chillin’ It” by Cole Swindell. I don’t normally advertise that country music is one of the genres on my radio dial but, well, there it is. Anyway, this is such a great song for listening to in the car when you’re out and about on a fantastic summer day. Makes me want to just keep on driving…(and hope my little guys fall fast asleep for good long naps). ps: Ignore the video, it’s typical country cheesy. Just close your eyes and take in the tunes. Anyone else have a great summer anthem they were loving this summer?

So that’s it for my round-up. I hope everyone out there had an amazing summer. Happy Labor Day, and here’s to a fantastic fall season!

What I’m Loving this Week…

Hello out there! Time is flying around here as usual and I can’t believe it’s already August. Boo…. Sometimes I feel like here in Michigan we wait all year for summer and then it just goes by in a flash. We’ve been taking advantage of the season though and have been trying to fit in lots of summer fun.

Anyway, I wanted to come on quickly and share some things I’ve been loving lately in fashion, fitness and drinks. I hope everyone is having an amazing summer! Enjoy!

What I’m Loving…

White Scalloped Lace Shirt from Goodnight Macaroon

White Scalloped Lace Shirt from Goodnight Macaroon

IN FASHION…The Goodnight Macaroon site for women’s apparel. I just discovered this via the 6th Street Design School blog by Kirsten Krason and I. LOVE. IT. Seriously. The clothing on here is amazing. Inspired by celebrity street style (think Olivia Palermo, Mirando Kerr, etc.), everything is super stylish but, get this, still affordable. This site is definitely worth checking out, you will not be disappointed. I’ve done some digging for more info on this site and it looks like it’s gaining quite a following because I’ve found lots of recent posts from various fashion bloggers posting about their favorite finds. Also, if you’re looking for a deal (like I always am) it looks like they do Friday Flash Sales for 48 hours (you need to follow them on Facebook for details) and they also partner with various bloggers to do 20% coupon codes as well. In any case, here are a few of my favorite things from the site right now – but like I said, go check it out. See something you like? Comment below and let me know so we can compare notes. ūüėČ – Navy Blue Floral Print Kimono Trousers ($55), White Scalloped Lace Drawstring Batwing Sleeve Shirt ($69), Heather Grey Drawstring Sweat Dress ($69.99) (This is perfect for moms!! How cute would this be at preschool drop-off?!), Colorblock Raglan Quilted Neoprene Shoulder Grey Marble Knit Sweater ($59.90 on sale)

Stella & Dot's new engravable collection

Stella & Dot’s new engravable collection

IN FASHION…These picks from Stella & Dot’s latest collection. I’m loving this scarf – it’s one of those items that you can wear now in summer but also later in fall because of the colors it has going on. The hot pink and white is great for summer but it also has accents of olive-y green that would pair really well with an army green jacket or skinny cargos in the fall. This bracelet because, A) It’s super chic and simple, B) The orange leather strap is such a great pop of color and most importantly, C) Net proceeds from this bracelet go to support the Every Mother Counts organization which is dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother. A very worthwhile cause and something, as a mother myself, I can definitely get behind. These engravable necklaces – Stella & Dot recently introduced these new pieces and because I love a good monogram, I’m loving these. They’ve come up with some very cute fonts and the quality of the engraving is top-notch. I just ordered an engravable ID Tag with my sons’ initials on it so I’ll have to post a photo once it arrives.

IN FITNESS…This workout video from Tone it Up. I first heard about this series on my friend and former colleague’s balanced living blog, Balancing B, and it sounded interesting. I’m always trying to fit in quick workouts since long workout sessions at the gym just aren’t feasible for me right now and this one was pretty good. It’s a high intensity interval training and the workout itself is probably only about 15 minutes long so it works perfectly for my schedule. Then, if I can get a 20-30 minute walk in with the boys in a stroller some other time during the day I feel like I’m good. (It’s a far cry from the way I used to exercise but it’s what works right now and I’ll take it!)

La Croix Lime

La Croix Lime

IN FOOD & DRINK…This sparkling water. It’s 100% natural with nothing artificial added, no sodium, nothing. I know this isn’t new but I’ve just recently started drinking them and they totally curb my craving for a Coke. I know, pop is so unhealthy for you, I know I know… That’s why I try to find alternatives. But there is just something about an ice cold Coke that is such a guilty pleasure for me. I think a big part of the attraction for me is the carbonation actually so I’ve found that drinking sparkling water helps to satisfy my cravings. I’ve tried other sparkling waters but then I decided to try La Croix and I’m really liking the flavors (I think Lime might be my favorite so far) as well as the fact that it’s in a can. I have always loved the sound of a can popping open and I think for some reason that drinks taste better from a can than a bottle. I know. I think I need some analysis…

Okay, that’s it from my end for now. Happy August!!

What’s in my Beach Bag?

My Ballard Designs beach bag

My Ballard Designs beach bag

Happy summer out there! I hope everyone had an amazing 4th of July holiday. My vacation in Petoskey was really nice with lots of time spent with family and friends. While in town I also attended my 20th high school reunion which is crazy because I seriously do not feel old enough to have just celebrated a milestone like that. But I have the pictures to prove it so I guess it’s true. Regardless, it was so nice to see good friends and catch up with old classmates.

Anyway, with summer in full swing now I’ve been seeing lots of beach bag posts around blog land so I figured I might as well add a post of my own to the mix. The contents of my beach bag are not all that glam considering that these days when I go to the beach I have two wild little boys to chase around. Gone are the days when a trip to the beach was spent actually lying down with a good magazine and sunning myself. But I love the beach so relaxing or not, it’s still one of my favorite summer activities. So here are some of my must-haves when making a trip out for some sun and sand:

A Big Ol’ Bag – With four of us hitting the beach now it’s impossible to cram everything we need into one beach bag but I went on a hunt a couple of years ago to find a big and cute bag to at least carry my own beach things and I ended up with a canvas tote from Ballard Designs. (See the post here.) So far, I still love it. It’s simple, classic looking, and fits everything I need for myself. My only complaint with it is that when the bag is really loaded up and heavy (like when it doubles as a book bag for our weekly trip to the library) the leather straps can dig into my shoulder and be pretty uncomfortable. But as a beach bag I really haven’t had that issue and I just deal with it for our library trips.

Easy-to-apply sunscreen is a must for me and my little ones.

Easy-to-apply sunscreen is a must for me and my little ones.

Easy-to-apply Sunscreen – I’ve always been careful about wearing a good sunscreen but now as a mom I’m even more careful with my little guys’ skin so sunscreen is an absolute must for my beach bag. What’s even more important is that the sunscreen be quick and easy to apply on squirmy and impatient little people. Luckily, I discovered Neutrogena’s Pure and Free Baby sunscreen stick in a broad spectrum SPF 60+ a few years ago and it has never failed me. It’s looks like a little mini stick of deodorant and it’s perfect for swiping on little faces fast. Both of my guys can sit still for the four seconds it takes me to do a lightning quick swipe of the sunscreen over their faces. I tend to carry one in my beach bag and one in my purse for every day. It’s great also for quickly rubbing on the backs of hands and forearms, or on the back of necks and tops of ears when we find ourselves on an impromptu trip to the playground. For the rest of their bodies I recently bought Babyganics’ Mineral-Based Sunscreen Spray with an SPF 50+. So far we’ve been liking it. I just pump the spray into my hand and then rub it (quickly) on to their legs and arms. It seems to rub in really well and doesn’t feel greasy. Want more sunscreen reviews? Check out this post from one of my favorite bloggers, Shana, at her recently re-designed blog The Mom Edit (formerly known as Ain’t No Mom Jeans.)

It's on my to-do list to get an all-weather blanket for beach trips, park playdates, etc.

It’s on my to-do list to get an all-weather blanket for beach trips, park playdates, etc.

Something great to sit on – Okay, disclaimer here, this item is not yet in my beach bag. But it is on my list to go out and get. A friend from my moms club has an indoor/outdoor travel blanket from Beth Bath and Beyond and every time I see her with it at a playdate I remind myself to go out and pick one up. This blanket is perfect for trips to the beach, park, and other outdoor places because it doesn’t pick up dirt and sand like a towel does and it folds up nicely with a convenient shoulder strap. Genius.

My new Lands End rash guard...I meant to get a shot of this while at the beach but got distracted...so here I am in all my bathing beauty glory on my parents' front steps...ha ha. (Lands End offers lots of other cute prints and bonus - looks like the tops are 50% off right now.)

Sun-protective Rashguards – To help with sun protection this year I decided to purchase rashguards for everyone. Lands’ End had a sale going earlier this year so I picked one up for everyone except the baby (his ended up coming from Babies R Us) and we’ve worn them a few times already. The one for my 4-year-old is long-sleeved and also has a hood so it worked really well for the windy weather we had at the beach on our recent vacation. Mine is long-sleeved as well and came in a super cute floral print. I loved not having to apply sunscreen on my upper body (I’m notorious for missing a spot and ending up with a splotch or sliver of sunburn in a random spot) but I will say that in warmer weather I got HOT. The first time I wore the rashguard it was a windy day and not super warm out so it was perfect. The second beach day we had was breeze-less and a lot warmer and by the end of our short trip to the beach I was roasting. I think a short-sleeve option would solve the issue. Something to think about for a future purchase.

OPI's "Color So Hot it Berns" made for a great 4th of July pedicure polish.

A Super Cute Pedi – Obviously this doesn’t go in my beach bag but it’s always fun to have cute toes at the beach, right? For our vacation this year I went with OPI’s “So Hot it Berns” polish and it was a really cute red that fit the 4th of July week really well. For a more coral-y/pink color I always love OPI’s “My Chihuahua Bites.”

So that’s my beach bag basics. What about everyone else? Have any great products you never leave home without when hitting the beach? I’d love to hear. Happy beach-going!!!

Cheers to Summer Vacations!

Hello and happy 4th of July week! I’ve already made it to my vacation destination for the week (Petoskey, MI) but if you’re still in vacation prep mode and needing some inspiration to get you through the chore of packing I thought I would pass along a few quick tips to help.

Make a List – I know this seems obvious but it’s the first place I start so I thought I would include it. Basically, I make a list of every item I need to pack broken down into categories like toiletries, outerwear, tops, bottoms, etc. It helps me plan my outfits ahead of time so I don’t over pack and it also helps me to think through any items I might need for special activities we could be doing while on vacation (biking, going to the beach, going out to dinner, etc.). To make this process really quick and simple I’ve saved two packing lists on my computer – one for summer and one for winter – that I can pull up each time I need to pack and then I just tweak them as needed. As I pull things out to pack I then cross items off the list to make sure I don’t forget anything.

Pick a Color Combo – I don’t do this every time I go on vacation but when planning my outfits it can be helpful to pick a color theme and stick with it for the trip. Doing this allows me to pack just a few accessories that will go with everything and then my individual clothing items can mix and match interchangeably as well as the mood strikes.

For our 4th of July vacation this year I went with a navy and white theme. It's one of my favorite summer color combos and looks so great with the backdrop of a lake and sandy beach.

Edit – Once I’m organized and in full-on packing mode I always give my suitcase a final edit to be sure I’m really bringing only the items I’ll really use. For me, this is always the hardest part because I have a tendency to want to pack extra things just in case. But I really do make an effort to pare things down wherever possible.

One thing that did not get edited in my packing was a few bottles of bubbly that I picked up at a recent shopping trip to Trader Joe's. One of my favorite summer things is a crisp glass of sparkling wine and it's definitely something I'll be enjoying this vacation - preferably with good friends overlooking some fantastic scenery.

So that’s it. Some simple tips to keep you organized so you can get through packing quickly and get to your vacation destination with less fuss and stress. Happy packing and here’s to summer vacations!

A Great Spring Sweater and Favorites from around the Web

Hello out there! I know it’s been ages since I’ve posted but the baby is sleeping and the 4-year-old is playing outside since the sun is finally shining so I thought I would do a quick post on a great spring sweater that I ordered from J. Crew Factory earlier this week and a few recent favorites from around the web. Enjoy and happy Sunday!

This is the J. Crew Factory Summerweight Boyfriend Sweater and it is FANTASTIC. I got it in navy but they also have it in mint, summer pink, and heather silver. I had also ordered the pink but I think I'll return it because it's just too bubble gum/Easter egg pink for me. I may get one in the heather silver instead. I seriously wish they had more colors because I would order several more. I just love the drape of the sweater and the weight is perfect for spring and cool summer nights. The sweater is made to be quite oversized so I wasn't sure what size to actually order (it goes down to a size XXS) but the XS seemed to be the right size for me and that is the size I would probably usually order in normal tops. To be on the safe side though, depending on how you want it to fit, you could probably go down a size. I just checked and the sweater is on sale for $35.50 right now. An awesome price for a sweater I know I'll wear a lot.

This creamy tomato tortellini soup is super tasty and so easy to make. I found the recipe through someone from my mom's club but it originally came from Recipe Swagger. If you have kids, try it. You can even throw in some veggies like peas or chopped spinach to up the nutritional value. Click on this photo to get the recipe. Yum!

The Chambray Shirt – A Versatile and Stylish Must-Have for your Wardrobe

A chambray shirt can be an amazingly versatile workhorse for your wardrobe.

A chambray shirt can be an amazingly versatile workhorse for your wardrobe.

Hello, All! Happy May! I cannot believe this month has FINALLY arrived. As some of you know, baby #2 is due at the end of this month and it’s been a loooong wait. Keeping up with my busy 3-yr-old boy throughout my pregnancy has pretty much worn me out and at this point I’m just counting the minutes until our second little munchkin decides that it’s time to make his or her debut. (I’m really hoping it’s sooner rather than later…)

In the meantime, I’m busying myself with lots of research into home decor ideas as it looks like we may have also finally found a new house (!!!!!) and of course, checking out the latest fashion trends. I’m so dreaming of that moment I’ll be able to dress in non-maternity wear again. (That, and to be able to bend over to pick something up without having to do an awkward sumo-like wrestler squat…arghhhh…that will be a most amazing day…)

Anyway, despite being majorly pregnant, I did recently make a non-maternity clothing purchase when I picked up a chambray shirt through J. Crew Factory online. It’s a piece that I’d been thinking I needed in my wardrobe because a chambray shirt can be such a great staple item year ’round, and when I saw this one on sale for about $45 I decided to go ahead and get it. I love the weight of the shirt and the quality seems really good. I have lots of ideas for how I will eventually wear it once I’m sans baby bump because a shirt like this is so versatile. For summer it can be cute with fun shorts and sandals, over a bathing suit as a beach cover-up, or with a fun printed skirt. And for colder times of the year it’s perfect peeking out of a sweater or warm vest, or layered under a dressier short-sleeve top. Throughout the year you can also dress it up or down depending on the accessories you choose. Need to look more polished? Pair your chambray shirt with a great statement necklace or earrings to add some instant shine.

With that said, looking for a few chambray options yourself now? There are lots out there but check out these super affordable ones from Old Navy ($20), Dillard’s ($15), Rock and Republic ($22), and Ralph Lauren ($69.50).

And for some of my favorite ways to style, check out these fantastic ideas from Jessica at Bows and Sequins, Anna Jane at See Jane, and Lucky Magazine.

Le Catch…A Must-Follow for the Fashion Obsessed

Hello and happy weekend! The weather here in my area is leaving much to be desired today but at least it’s not snowing – it’s just cold and damp. In any case, since it’s the weekend I thought I would pass along some info on a new favorite blog of mine that I discovered recently in case some comfy-cozy couch time while Internet surfing is on your agenda this weekend. It’s called Le Catch and it’s written by former Lucky Magazine West Coast Editor, Marlien Rentmeester. It has quickly become one of my favorite fashion resources because of the emphasis she puts on searching out a great mix of both high and low-budget items. I love that when I read the blog there are lots of items that could actually find their way into my closet as opposed to simply expensive designer pieces. It’s still fun to see the latter as well though so all in all it’s a fun read. You can check it for yourself, but a few of my favorite items from recent posts are below. Enjoy and have a great weekend!
