Le Catch…A Must-Follow for the Fashion Obsessed

Hello and happy weekend! The weather here in my area is leaving much to be desired today but at least it’s not snowing – it’s just cold and damp. In any case, since it’s the weekend I thought I would pass along some info on a new favorite blog of mine that I discovered recently in case some comfy-cozy couch time while Internet surfing is on your agenda this weekend. It’s called Le Catch and it’s written by former Lucky Magazine West Coast Editor, Marlien Rentmeester. It has quickly become one of my favorite fashion resources because of the emphasis she puts on searching out a great mix of both high and low-budget items. I love that when I read the blog there are lots of items that could actually find their way into my closet as opposed to simply expensive designer pieces. It’s still fun to see the latter as well though so all in all it’s a fun read. You can check it for yourself, but a few of my favorite items from recent posts are below. Enjoy and have a great weekend!

So, a few months ago I got a little surprise in my mailbox in the form of Redbook magazine. I’ll admit, I’ve never been a reader of the magazine because honestly, the cover never really looked that interesting and I just didn’t think the target reader was someone in my demographic (for some reason I always felt like the magazine skewed towards a more mature audience). But a few months ago I started receiving complimentary copies for no reason and I started reading the magazine because I’m always desperate for anything to read when trying to pass the time on the treadmill. So I read a couple of issues when they came but didn’t think that I would ever actually want to subscribe. Then came the April issue a few weeks ago – along with a complete redesign – (now the complimentary copies all started to make sense…) and I have to say, I love it! Apparently, the magazine listened to its readers and decided to institute a giant makeover from cover to cover. Included in that makeover was an amped up focus on fashion and style and the commitment to featuring more amazing apparel and home items priced under $50. The result is great features and content that I’m actually interested in and some fantastic fashion and decor finds that fit my budget. See below for a run-down of some of my favorite items from this new Redbook. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for the next issue to see what they come up with next. Enjoy!

Fashion Under $50

Simply Vera Vera Wang Pintuck Georgette Top (Kohl’s – On sale for $30) – A pretty little sleeveless top that could be worn in a variety of ways – for work under a blazer or with a pencil skirt, for a wedding shower with white ankle pants and heels, or for more casual activities with boyfriend jeans and funky jewelry.

Tweed Love 21 Jacket (Forever 21 – $37) – A multi-colored tweed jacket (like a modern and incredibly inexpensive Chanel jacket) perfect for work or dressed down for a weekend night out.

Navy Eyelet Dress (Old Navy – On sale now for $25) – This is a super cute and classic-looking dress that could work well for so many summer functions. I love the navy but it comes in several other colors as well and you can’t beat the price. Dressed up with fun accessories it could be a great go-to dress for summer your wardrobe.

Home Under $100

Small Wire Side Table (Target – $59.99) – This could be really great with a few small accessories perched on top and a nice break from the norm if most of your furniture is more traditional.

White Studded Pillow (Bed Bath and Beyond – $39.99) – While this may not be a great pillow to lay your head on, I do love the texture and interest it could add a room.

1 Dream Room, 14 Real Ideas

Mid-Century Style Club Chairs (Sears – $195/pair) – These aren’t my usual style but I really like them and for the price they can’t be beat.

Joe Fresh at JCP

Hello, All! Happy March! I don’t know about you, but I am so ready for spring. Could this winter be any longer? Ugh! Here’s to hoping sunshine and nicer weather are on the way soon. In the meantime, I thought I would post about a new-ish fashion brand coming to a JCP (that’s JC Penney) near you.

So, I’ve been seeing clothing from the Joe Fresh brand in my favorite fashion magazines for awhile now and I’ve been frustrated that the brand was only available in a few stores on the East Coast. Especially because it seemed like every time I would see an item featured it would be something super cute for a great price. The fact that you couldn’t even order anything online was really annoying and I kept wondering when this brand would be available to more of us fashion lovers. Well, I finally got to the bottom of the story when I recently saw an article about Joe Fresh apparel being sold in JC Penney stores starting this spring. Hooray! Apparently the brand is actually a Canadian brand but is now making its national debut here in the U.S. The brand sells on-trend women’s apparel around an Old Navy pricepoint. And as of just recently, the brand is now available for purchase online at with product available in stores very soon. I happened to be near a JC Penney in my area over the weekend actually so I stopped in and saw that they’re in the process of prepping the shop-in-shop space that Joe Fresh will occupy. I’m excited to see the clothes in person and I’m hoping that the quality doesn’t disappoint. I’m all about a bargain but hate to spend money on something that just plain looks cheap or will fall apart after a few wears. I’ll keep you all posted once I’ve seen the clothes in person, but in the meantime you can check them out online here. I’m especially loving this lace-front tee for $19 (I’ve seen something similar at J.Crew for probably three times the price), this embroidered shift dress for $49, these slim fit sateen pants for $29, and these slim fit color jeans for $19 (I love the yellow).

2012 Golden Globe Red Carpet – Who Wore it Best?

The 2012 Golden Globe awards show aired last night so today the talk in the fashion world was all about who was wearing what and which star stole the red carpet with the best look. Between making dinner and tending to my toddler throughout the evening (especially when he decided to dribble dark chocolate Oreo drool on our tan couch!) I didn’t get to focus on the pre-show and the awards themselves as much as I would have liked. But I did see enough to still have my own opinions about the red carpet fashion. What stood out to me the most about this awards show was that I really felt like the best dresses were worn by lesser-known actresses or non-actresses altogether.  I know a lot of people will disagree with me here, and don’t get me wrong – there were some great dresses out there on big names, but for some reason the two dresses that I really loved were worn by Shailene Woodley (an up-and-comer in The Descendants) and Stacy Keibler (George Clooney’s girlfriend). I absolutely loved Woodley’s silvery Marchesa dress. It was delicate and filmy and sparkly all at once, and the v-cut in the back was just so flattering. I loved it. I really do think that if a better known actress had been wearing this dress we would be hearing a lot more about it today. The other standout to me was Stacy Keibler who wore a beautiful and classic red dress. It fit her beautifully and was so elegant but fresh with a great bow detail on the back. The best thing about the whole look was that she managed to look fantastic while still appearing not to try too hard. Some of the dresses you see come down the carpet have so much going on that they just don’t work. To be a best-dressed look the dress has to flatter and bring out the best in the person wearing it – otherwise even a fantastic work of fashion can fall flat. So those are my two cents about the Globes’ red carpet fashion. But enough of what I thought – what did you guys think? How about Theron, Winslet, Williams, or Danes. Let me know what looks you loved, I would love to hear!

Follis and Kate Spade Collaborative Handbag Available Now

Follis designer, Catherine Meyer, has collaborated with Kate Spade New York (KSNY) to create this fantastic black handbag that is available now online and in KSNY stores.

Happy October! The leaves are falling here in my neck of the woods and autumn is officially underway. This is my favorite time of the year and I am loving the fall color and everything that comes along with the season  – apple cider, fresh pumpkins, crisp fresh air – and the list goes on. For lots of fashionistas out there this season is also a favorite because of all the rich colors and fabrics designers utilize for their fall lineups, but this year fashion lovers have another reason to be excited. Last November I wrote a post about up-and-coming handbag designer, Catherine Meyer, from the handbag line, Follis, and as part of that post I told you about Meyer’s first place win in the 2010 Independent Handbag Designer Award competition. As a result of that win, Meyer was given an amazing opportunity to collaborate with Kate Spade New York (KSNY) on a limited edition handbag for the 2011 holiday season. I’m happy to report that this collaboration is now complete and the handbag is now available for sale! The black leather bag is a perfect melding of Follis and Kate Spade design sensibilities featuring Follis signature lacing on the sides and Kate Spade detailing like 14kt gold-plated hardware and the Kate Spade New York signature in gold in the top center of the bag. The handbag also features a lovely cream interior and two compartments to help keep things organized. The bag is retailing exclusively now online on the KSNY web site and in KSNY stores.  For more information about the collaboration between Meyer and Kate Spade check it out here.

Princess Catherine Style Watch – On Tour in North America

Hello, All! I hope you all had a fantastic 4th of July holiday  (and enjoyed some fun and festive fashions to help celebrate). I was on vacation in northern Michigan for the week and  enjoyed every moment. The weather was absolutely perfect with bright sunny days and cool, crisp nights, and I soaked up some much needed R&R with family and good friends.  In addition to the beach and bike rides and late afternoon cocktails in a lawn chair I was also keeping tabs on news of Prince William and Princess Catherine’s first official visit to Canada and the U.S. I’ve had a great time reading about all of the activities and ceremonies they’ve taken part in as they’ve traveled throuhout the trip, but of course the most exciting part of the news for me has been all of the coverage on Catherine’s wardrobe. From the moment she left England and throughout each day of the visit thus far, her wardrobe and style choices have been spot on. I always love her classic and well-tailored looks and the outfits she chose for this trip have not disappointed. One of my favorites includes the white Reiss dress the princess originally wore for her official engagement photos. She paired the dress with a bright red maple leaf fascinator to celebrate Canada Day and the result was fantastic. The dress was stunning on her and the fasinator added a great pop of color and fun for such a festive occasion. It really was a great look. Another favorite of mine was  the ivory sailor-inspired Alexander McQueen dress the duchess wore while in Prince Edward Island. Ever since I read Anne of Green Gables at the age of nine, I have wanted to make a visit to Prince Edward Island where the book series was based. I was such a huge fan that I can’t even tell you how many times I read the books and watched the movies that were made based on the series.  I read that Princess Catherine is an Anne fan herself and that the dress could have been a nod to some of the fashions that appeared in the movies. Whatever the inspiration, I loved it. It showed off her slender figure and was spot-on for the maritime locale. These were just two of the looks that I really loved, but there were many more that definitely caught my eye as well. The royals’ tour will wrap up quickly now and if you haven’t been able to follow the fashion I found a great image gallery on US Magazine’s online site that showcases many of the looks. Take a look and enjoy!

The Countdown is on for the Royal Wedding…and the Reveal of that Dress!

Westminster Abbey Architecture by Vera Kratochvil”>

Only one week to go until the Royal Wedding and the reveal of Kate Middleton's wedding gown. The wedding ceremony will take place at London's Westminster Abbey on April 29.

Hello, All! Cheers to a long holiday weekend! And cheers also to the fact that we’re now officially just one week away from what many are calling the wedding of the century – the Royal Wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton. Unless you’ve been living a completely media-free existence for the last several months, you know that the ceremony will take place one week from today on April 29 with most coverage starting around 4 a.m. (EDT). And if you’re like me, despite the early timing for those of us on this side of the pond, you’ll be watching all of the pomp and circumstance live while nestled on the couch in your pj’s. (I have to admit though, now that my 13-month-old is finally sleeping through the night on a consistent basis I really hate the idea of waking myself up on purpose in the wee hours of the morning but I’m willing to do it just for this.) After months of talk and speculation I just cannot wait to see the festivities and of course Kate’s wedding gown! What in the world will it look like?! Will it be classic and elegant or more modern and striking?! Will it have a long train, lots of embellishment and frill, or be more clean and sleek-looking?! And who is the designer behind this infamous gown? So many questions, but now only one week to go until we finally have some answers and get to see what could be referred to as the “wedding dress of the century.”  Whatever the look, the dress is sure to be much talked about and I cannot wait to take in all of the coverage. Speaking of coverage, I found this handy list compiled by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram which shows the schedule of coverage that is planned by all of the major news and cable channels to help you determine just what channel you’ll want to tune into on the big day. For official news and information on the wedding, you can also check out So here’s to one more week of exciting anticipation of the Royal Wedding. Enjoy the fun, and if you’ll be watching the festivities next week, happy viewing!

2011 Oscar Fashion!

Hollywood celebs lit up the red carpet with fabulous fashion at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards. (Image courtesy of Salvatore Vuono/

Happy Monday, All!  I hope everyone is recovering from all of the glitz and glam of the Oscars that we saw yesterday. I had a front row seat on my couch to take in all of the action on the red carpet and action there was! I have to say, I saw so many fantastic dresses out there that it’s been hard for me to decide who I would say was best dressed last night. But after letting my thoughts on this marinate all day, I’ve got to say that I really think Mila Kunis should walk away with this one. Out of everything I saw I just keep coming back to her dress, it’s the one that has just really stuck out in my mind. It wasn’t a sparkly eye-catcher, but it was just so pretty and light and elegant looking. The media is reporting that the dress was lavendar, but to me on my TV screen it looked more like a cornflower blue. Either way, I thought it suited Kunis so well and there really wasn’t anything else out there yesterday that was quite like it. While there was a lot of lace on the lower half of the gown, I absolutely LOVED the lace in the bust area on the dress – that detail on the gown really made the look even more delicate and pretty. All in all, I just loved it. After Kunis in her Elie Saab gown, my second favorite dress of the evening was hard to choose as well, but I really think that I would give this to Gwyneth Paltrow in her sparkly Calvin Klein Couture sheath dress. I don’t know if I would have liked this look as well if anyone else had done it, but on Paltrow it just really worked. And while it wasn’t the traditional evening gown that you think of when you think Oscars fashion, to me it just really stood out and felt super fresh and fashionable. And what can I say, I love sparkle so all that shine didn’t hurt! Beyond these top two looks, others that I also really liked were Mandy Moore in Monique Lhuillier (I didn’t care for her makeup, but I really did love the dress), Michelle Williams in Chanel, and Halle Berry (of course) in Marchesa. Another dress that really caught my eye was worn by a non-celeb actually, and that was the black dress by Kaufmanfranco that Matthew McConaughey’s girlfriend Camila Alves was wearing. I don’t know if anyone else saw that one, but I actually really liked it a lot.

All in all, I think it was a great night for fashion. I had a great time watching and I hope you all did too. As my husband likes to say, the Oscar red carpet is like my Super Bowl. Too bad it only comes once a year. Anyway, let me know what you all thought about the fashion, I’d love to hear. Happy Monday!

Go Red this Friday!

This Friday, February 4, is National Wear Red Day, an event sponsored by the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” campaign. The initiative is aimed at raising awareness around the issue of heart disease amongst women and encourages people to wear red. It’s an extremely important issue because, according to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death amongst women age 20 and older. To put it in perspective, one in three American women die of heart disease, where one in 30 die of breast cancer. With so many women already affected by this disease or at risk, the Go Red for Women campaign is working to educate people about the severity of the disease, its symptoms, and ways to help prevent it. For more information about all of these things, you can check out the Go Red for Women web site. And if you want to do your part to spread the message and wear red this Friday but don’t have anything that fits the bill currently in your closet, I’ve picked out some great pieces online that you might want to check out below. You can also shop for Go Red items on the campaign’s web site. Here you’ll find jewelry, apparel and other red-themed items you can wear or use to help support this cause.  As for myself, this issue is near and dear to my own heart as both of my grandmothers have suffered from heart disease so I will definitely be wearing my own bit of red this Friday to support the cause. Go Red!

Golden Globes Wrap-Up

So, it’s Friday and I’m just now getting around to writing about the fashion we saw at the Golden Globes last Sunday. What can I say, it’s been a busy week. (But TGIF, btw!) In any case, when it comes to Hollywood award shows, I have to admit that I really don’t care all that much about the awards themselves. But what I do love is watching the red carpet as the celebrities arrive before the show starts. So this past Sunday when the Golden Globes awards show aired, I made sure I was tuned in to E! for all of the red carpet coverage before the awards were actually handed out. While watching the celebs strut their stuff, I saw several dresses that I really loved (and of course, some that I really wasn’t wild about). I love sparkle, so most of the dresses that caught my eye had some significant bling going on in the way of sequins and crystals and other embellishments. One of my top favorites of the night was Olivia Wilde’s dark coffee-colored and sequin-adorned gown by Marchesa. I loved that the color was a little different from what we normally see out on the red carpet and the sequins of course were gorgeous. Other favorites of mine from the night were dresses worn by Carrie Underwood (Badgley Mischka), Julie Bowen (Tadashi Soji), Anne Hathaway (Giorgio Armani Prive), and Jennifer Lopez (Zuhair Murad). A lot more sequins and shine going on with most of these, and in the case of Bowen, some really pretty flower details. So who were your favorites? There were a lot more great gowns on the carpet so what were your thoughts? How about Claire Danes’ minimalist look? Or Natalie Portman’s loose-fitting pink gown to allow for her baby bump? Or how about Halle Berry or Sandra Bullock? Any thoughts on what they were wearing? It seemed there were a few trends going on but still a lot of variety out there. So let me know what you thought. And for those of you that loved some of these looks enough to wear yourselves, without the designer price tag of course (and if you’re lucky enough to have some sort of fabulous event to wear them to) I heard this morning that knock-offs of some of these gowns are already in the works. They should be available in 6-8 weeks, so get out your wallets girls and start the fitness routine now. 😉

Okay, that’s it for this round of awards show wrap-up. I hope you all enjoyed the fashion as much as I did. Happy Friday and have a great weekend!
